Our Hermann Oak® Veg-Tan Single Shoulders are a great pick for beginner projects or anyone looking to experience Hermann Oak. They offer a more consistent shape and less stretch, and are ideal for small size projects like book covers, bags, chap yokes, journal wraps, and tool rolls. They’re easy to cut, wet form, carve, stamp/tool, and dye. Natural Veg-Tan will develop a rich patina over time and also can be dyed and oiled.
Trimmed from premium select sides, Hermann Oak Single Shoulders are a byproduct of sides being cut down into bends at the tannery. They are dry-cut after tanning from pre-stretched select sides. Note: Hermann Oak does not produce double shoulders, as hides are cut down the spine only.
Hermann Oak veg-tan are suspended in vats and soaked for much longer than most leathers. Hermann Oak takes 6-8 weeks, whereas commercial tanneries typically tan veg-tan hides in 10-14 days. The result is a firmer, denser leather that tools, wet forms, and stamps beautifully, as well has a slightly darker natural tone.
